For Immediate Release – January 12, 2001
Toronto, Ontario – Spectra Inc. (SSA: CDNX) reports that it has embarked on product enhancements to its Brake SafeTM visual brake stroke indicator system and the Brake InspectorTM electronic brake diagnostic system, and is actively pursuing new product opportunities for the transportation industry. The company’s strategic focus continues to emphasize the delivery of productivity enhancing and safety-improving products into this multi-billion dollar industry.
Brake SafeTM has been modified to increase sales penetration of bus transportation fleets, especially municipal transit vehicles. According to Andrew Malion, chairman of Spectra Inc., “Transit buses have a greater variation in brake chamber mounting and positioning on vehicle axles compared to trucks and trailers. We have successfully modified the Brake SafeTM bracketing system and visual indicator components to fit the more demanding applications for transit buses. This has opened up new sales opportunities and we are currently involved in trial evaluations with two major municipal transit authorities in the United States.”
Brake InspectorTM continues to gain widespread attention and interest in both Canada and the United States. A comprehensive brake diagnostic manual has been finalized and will be supplied with product shipments permitting optimum use of the system in trouble-shooting problems with the foundation brake system. Brake InspectorTM is currently being modified to permit quicker installation through the development of a central junction connection for sensors and a more efficient data feed. A new “smart sensor” is under development to increase storage abilities of brake application data and related performance. According to Andrew Malion, “The new generation of Brake InspectorTM will involve direct transmission of data to the OEM computer display where available or to a new dash-mounted alphanumeric LCD display module. Wireless communication capability direct to fleet dispatch and maintenance facilities is being added to the system. This will lead to significant improvement in fleet productivity, maintenance, and cost savings.”
Spectra Inc. has been actively assessing new companion products for development and sale to the transportation segment. Terry Faye, Director of Sales and Technical Support, commented, “The opportunity to supply the transportation business with products that address operational productivity, maintenance savings, and improved safety is unlimited. We are currently evaluating new products in these areas including a real time vehicle locator and routing system for trucks, trailers, and buses, an air brake lock down system that secures vehicles and equipment on site or in transit and we are very excited about the feasibility of introducing a brake pad wear sensor product line. Our product strategy involves offering a fully-integrated suite of performance monitoring and reporting products that utilize a common communication platform and incorporate industry protocols for diagnostic, transmission and communication functions.”
